Hello!
My illustration career began in 1995, and I have always been driven by a fascination with people’s faces. It’s during brief moments of eye contact that our feelings, stories and common experiences pass between us, and this is often what I try to capture in my work.
While portrait illustration is my speciality, it’s not all I do. Using paints, pens and a touch of Photoshop, I’ve illustrated everything from fresh foods to landscapes and book covers to event posters, and more. I work collaboratively with clients around the world, including leading advertising and design agencies, editorial and book publishers, as well as fulfilling private commissions.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved drawing and painting people. The excitement of depicting their faces, bodies and the environments they’re in – capturing moments in people’s lives – is something I will never grow tired of. Their hairstyles, posture, the ruffles in their clothes, the emotion in their eyes especially, but also any perceived imperfections – all these details tell us who they really are.
I’m inspired by artists who focus on people and narrative, like Lucian Freud, Peter Blake and Sidney Nolan. I love the colours and shapes of Patrick Heron and David Hockney and the exaggerated forms of Fernando Botero. Drawing without rules is a tremendous motivation; it gives you freedom as an artist, and I always enjoy projects that stretch the boundaries.
I have a first class degree in Graphic Design from Kingston University, and my work has appeared in many illustration annuals over the years.
